Good question. Here at the WD we like it when people ask us questions about drinking; it is an area where we have done some research –Mom might say that rather than research, we simply lived in bars. Well, since you asked, let us tell you a little bit about the amazing world of cañas.
Cañas are the way the Spaniards fool themselves into socializing. And what is socializing for Spaniards? Well, that is nothing else but the good old school fashioned meetup at the pub that everybody else simply calls drinking.
So how do the Cañas work? Well, the basic idea is that they are so small, they seem so harmless and you down them so quick that it is a no-brainer to stop for a Caña with your buddy on your way home. In essence, it feels like a guilt free way of drinking. But then, you down them so quick that as soon as you are done with the first one you find yourself saying “Camarero, another CAÑA, por favor”. The thing is the alcohol comes at very tiny increments and the next Caña always seems, well, powerless or incapable of separating from whatever other goal you had in mind.
So… next thing you know, you are late for dinner at home or you missed the game but, what the heck! You had such a great time with your buddy! And at the end of the day, you did nothing bad, just a little bit of socializing. And if you did it here with us, well, after all, this is a bookstore, isn’t it? So if someone asks, you can simply say, “Well, I was socializing at the bookstore with my friends.”
