Mick Flannery has a voice for the ages, a complete Master of his craft” cited by Clash Magazine, whilst The Sunday Times said he “conjures up exquisite story-telling.” His latest offering ‘Goodtime Charlie’ Flannery’s eighth studio record went straight to No. 1 at home in Ireland on the independent charts, and No. 2 on the Official Charts, Making it his sixth top 5 record to date, with 3 Number 1 records already under his belt. ‘Goodtime Charlie’ is also the first international signing for John Prine’s beloved Oh Boy Records.

Mick Flannery’s songs are fluent in expressing layered aspects of the human condition, its flaws, triumphs, and general uncertainty. His live shows are renowned for his self-deprecating humour, audience engagement and the ability to bring people on a journey of both heartbreak and joy, often in the same instance.

Mick has built up a reputation over the past decade as one of Ireland hardest working musicians, touring extensively at home and in more recent years abroad as his songs have been reaching folks farther afield. Ireland’s best kept secret appears to be no more.

Inner Moonlight is the monthly poetry series for the Wild Detectives! Our show is the second Wednesday of every month. Meet us in the backyard at 7:30pm on Wednesday March 13th for a live reading from one featured writer, with a brief open mic to follow. Don’t worry, podcast fans! We will record the live show and release it as a podcast episode for y’all. This month, we are proud to present poet Lauren Kalstad!

Lauren Kalstad is a poet, children’s book author, and Lecturer at the University of North Texas. She received her BA in Creative Writing from UNT with a minor in

French, and went on to receive her MFA from New York University. Her works have appeared in publications including The Belleville Park Pages, The Alarmist, The Coe Review, and others. In 2020, she published her first children’s book To the Stars in Bumper Cars. Her love of food led to a freelance career in culinary journalism with articles published in EATER and Edible. She lives in the Bishop Arts area with her husband, daughter, and mini Aussiedoodle, Alfie. She’s currently working on her debut collection of poetry.

About Alain Mabanckou

Born in Congo-Brazzaville in 1966, Alain Mabanckou is a novelist, poet, journalist and academic. In 2015, he was professor of artistic creation at the prestigious Collège de France. He currently teaches literature and creative writing in the Department of French & Francophone Studies and African Studies Center at UCLA.

Known for his novels and non-fiction writing depicting the experience of contemporary Africa and the African diaspora in France, Alain Mabanckou is among the most recognized Franco African writers in France in contemporary literature.

In 2006, he won the Prix Renaudot, one of the highest distinctions in French literature, for his novel Mémoires de porc-épic (2006).

Laugh of Totality is an evening of the funniest nerds, comedians, and scientists-turned-standup comics joking about the upcoming solar eclipse in cities that are in the path of totality (total eclipse coverage). Expect a ridiculous, raunchy, and informative night that will leave your brain and abs hurting from laughter. This nerdy comedy show is so well-rounded, we’re being protested by the flat earth society.

This show features both national headliners and local comedians joking about the science, history, and culture of eclipses.

After a 5 year recording hiatus, Chris Pureka returns with a collection of tender and hopeful songs.

Chris Pureka is an internationally acclaimed singer-songwriter based in Portland, Oregon. Their elegant emotionality as a vocalist and flair as a lyricist have garnered them favorable comparisons to Chan Marshall, Bruce Springsteen, and Patty Griffin. Over many years of touring on both sides of the Atlantic, they have shared the stage with such diverse and esteemed artists as The Lumineers, Gregory Alan Isakov, The Cowboy Junkies, Haley Heynderickx, and Ani DiFranco. They have had their songs featured on such television shows as Brothers and Sisters and Shameless, as well as a song featured in the Sundance featured indie film, The Royal Road. The Longest Year is Pureka’s 8th release.

The Longest Year, the new 7 track EP, was written and recorded during the last 2 years of pandemic life and touches on themes of hope and acceptance. Despite the pandemic backdrop, the album emits an overall aura of warmth and gentle hopefulness. While Pureka has always been known for a heart-on-sleeve candidness, there is a deeper vulnerable quality to these songs, as well as a more stripped down intimate production, that harkens back to the songwriter’s earliest material.

The songs were partly recorded in the studio and partly recorded at home, giving it both some grit and some polish: a hybrid sound that adds to the albums intimacy. Due to the isolation and lack of travel during 2020/21, Pureka played many of the instruments themself, bringing in some local Portland musicians to fill out the sound.

The title track, The Longest Year, is a anthem for these difficult times. With its 3 part harmonies and simple guitar and upright bass arrangement it could almost be a re-imagining of Stephen Foster’s Hard Times Come Again No More. The chorus comes in with the message that many of us need right now “All, I know is we are enough, so keep on and keep your head up”.

The title track leads on into the train beat of the second track, the single on the album, the lush but delicate, Sky Spinning. Sky Spinning shines with intimate vocals and lyrics about the complexity of relationships – how one’s own best interests and the interests of a relationship might diverge over time. “I don’t know how to save us, I just know how to save me.” New arrangements of the classic cover songs, Helpless (Neil Young) and What a Wonderful World add a scope and timelessness to the album.

Raised in the mountains of Montana and making a home on the road, Ira Wolf‘s music and writing are vulnerably honest as she explores heartache, homesickness, and the highs and lows of an unconventional wandering lifestyle. She draws from personal experience and connects on an intimate level with her audience through her truthful lyrics and melancholy vocals.

Since she began touring in 2014, Ira has earned more than 100 million plays on Spotify, performed across six continents, and shared stages with artists such as Penny and Sparrow, Dead Man Winter, Adeem the Artist, David Ramirez, and Andrea von Kampen. She’s been featured for her songwriting and vocal style at Rocky Mountain Folks Fest, Kerrville Folk Festival, Telluride Bluegrass Festival, Americanafest, and Midwest Music Fest, and continues to travel the U.S. while living full time in a camper van.

After releasing her third album, The Closest Thing to Home, Ira took a step away from music to focus on her mental health and other passions. She recently finished recording her highly-anticipated fourth studio record, Rock Bottom, and began releasing singles in anticipation of the album release October 13th.

Mike Viola is a producer, musician, songwriter and singer. Viola may be best known for his work with Panic! at the Disco, Andrew Bird, Ryan Adams, Jenny Lewis, Fall Out Boy and Mandy Moore, but his solo career stands on its own starting with a number of acclaimed records as the leader of New York based cult favorite Candy Butchers and 7 critically adored Mike Viola records. His original music has been featured on soundtracks for movies such as That Thing You Do!, Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story and Get Him to the Greek.

Decades into his career, his music continues to resonate with and inspire new generations of musicians and music lovers. Viola is cranking out more music than ever, notably the recent fan- favorites, 2019’s “The American Egypt” and 2021’s “Godmuffin”.

A new Mike Viola album, “Paul McCarthy”, will be released on April 14, 2023 via Good Morning Monkey/Grand Phony in the US, Lojinx in Europe and Sony in Japan.

Paul McCarthy was recorded over the summer of 2022 on 1/2” tape at “Barebones”, Viola’s home studio in Los Angeles. Joined by his friends Jake Sinclair on bass and Brendon Urie on drums. Viola says, “I set out to make a sonic monster using the legs of ‘James Gang Rides Again,’ the heart of Black Sabbath ‘Paranoid,’ with my kid brain inside my greying middle-aged head on top. I’ve hit a point in my life where instinct has taken the reins fully, logic now waits in the wings to sweep up the stage and pay the taxi fare home. This album is the result of committing to this path fully and laughing all the way.”
